Changing atmospheric Δ^(14)C and the record of deep water paleoventilation ages

    Get PDF
We propose a new calculation method to better estimate the deep water ventilation age from benthic-planktonic foraminifera ^(14)C ages. Our study is motivated by the fact that changes in atmospheric Δ^(14)C through time can cause contemporary benthic and planktonic foraminifera to have different initial Δ^(14)C values. This effect can cause spurious ventilation age changes to be interpreted from the geologic data. Using a new calculation method, ^(14)C projection ages, we recalculate the data from the Pacific Ocean. Contrary to previous results, we find that the Pacific intermediate and deep waters were about 600 years older than today at the last glacial maximum. In addition, there are possible signals of ventilation age change prior to ice sheet melting and at the Younger Dryas. However, the data are still too sparse to constrain these ventilation transients

Path methods for strong shift equivalence of positive matrices

In the early 1990's, Kim and Roush developed path methods for establishing strong shift equivalence (SSE) of positive matrices over a dense subring U of the real numbers R. This paper gives a detailed, unified and generalized presentation of these path methods. New arguments which address arbitrary dense subrings U of R are used to show that for any dense subring U of R, positive matrices over U which have just one nonzero eigenvalue and which are strong shift equivalent over U must be strong shift equivalent over U_+. In addition, we show positive real matrices on a path of shift equivalent positive real matrices are SSE over R_+; positive rational matrices which are SSE over R_+ must be SSE over Q_+; and for any dense subring U of R, within the set of positive matrices over U which are conjugate over U to a given matrix, there are only finitely many SSE-U_+ classes.Comment: This version adds a 3-part program for studying SEE over the reals. One part is handled by the arxiv post "Strong shift equivalence and algebraic K-theory". This version is the author version of the paper published in the Kim memorial volume. From that, my short lifestory of Kim (and more) is on my web page http://www.math.umd.edu/~mboyle/papers/index.htm

NEEDLES IN A HAYSTACK: COST-EFFECTIVE SAMPLING OF MARINE SPORT ANGLERS

    Get PDF
An obstacle to conducting economic studies of marine sport anglers is the difficulty and expense in drawing a representative sample. Unlike inland fishing, where licenses are required in all states, only selected states require a marine sport fishing license and these licenses usually only cover selected marine fishing activities. Currently, there are no low cost methods of obtaining a representative sample of marine anglers because they are generally not licensed, use multiple access points, and represent a small proportion of the general population. The difficulty and expense of drawing a representative sample may have stifled attempts to study marine anglers. We test alternative sampling strategies by comparing the characteristics of a representative sample of experienced marine anglers with the characteristics of two other samples using multivariate and univariate analysis techniques. We conclude a sample of marine anglers drawn from the population of licensed inland anglers is not significantly different from the representative sample of experienced marine anglers.Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,

The Effects of Risk Management Programs on Financial Professionals\u27 Judgments

    Get PDF
Despite the present focus in practice on enterprise risk management (ERM), academic studies have not responded to the question, “How do risk management programs (RMPs) influence the business decisions of financial professionals?” This study addresses this issue by examining the effects of RMPs on the levels of judgment conservatism and effort exercised by financial professionals. Specifically, in a 2 x 2 between-subjects experiment using experienced financial professionals as participants, I manipulated RMP type (i.e., robust or ceremonial) and financial risk level (i.e., high or low). The study examines the effect of RMP type and the interaction of RMP type and financial risk level on the degree of conservatism and effort of financial professionals’ business decisions. A robust RMP receives strong support from senior management and board members, who then hold financial professionals accountable for the level of financial risk that they assume in making business decisions. A ceremonial RMP lacks any real or substantive management or board support, but exists primarily to provide an appearance of a functioning and regulatory compliant RMP. Risk management interview studies (Viscelli, 2013; Cohen et al., 2015) support the relevance of robust (agency theory) versus ceremonial (institutional theory) perspectives from risk management practitioners. Contrary to prediction, no significant relationship was found between RMP type or the interaction of RMP type with the financial risk level and either the degree of financial professional judgment conservatism or effort. However, a significant relationship between the financial risk level alone and the degree of financial professional judgment effort was found. These findings remain unchanged after adding to the model various possible control variables reflecting participants’ demographics and experience. Thus, the results of this study provide no evidence that a robust versus a ceremonial RMP significantly impacts financial professionals’ decisions about whether to make project investments or the amount of time or the extent of consultation needed for them to decide. Additional analyses revealed significant relationships between RMP type or investment size and other dependent variables. These results offer important implications for practitioners and policymakers, as well as contribute to academic research about new applications of accountability and agency theories

Aquinas' Roman Commentary on Peter Lombard

The address presents the recently discovered second Roman commentary of St. Thomas Aquinas on Peter Lombard’s "Liber sententiarum" and offers some reflections on work to be done by scholars in the study of this text. The first part of the address presents the manuscript and its circumstances to argue for the authenticity of the text. The second part briefly describes the character and content of Thomas’ Lectura romana. The third part addresses a concern expressed by Frs. Dondaine and Torrell that a rationalist tendency in the text’s consideration of the Trinity raises questions of its authenticity
